Enter two cameras that I think present photography with a human face and real dials that click and move with the upmost precision. First I will look at the RX-1 a new full frame (yes FULL frame) pocket 35mm fixed lenses camera and then I* will turn my attention to the X2 an entry point 35 mm from Leica (now in an extra special Paul Smith edition). Both these cameras are best of class, crafted cameras. Both will set you back at least 3000 US dollars. Both are drop dead beautiful objects that you would carry with pride.

Let’s be honest, if you wanted a good camera with all of, or at least most of, the tech for a very good camera, the Canon EOS 7D or the Nikon D7000 have your court covered. So why invest in a 6D or D600 when you can get so much more from a 5D Mark III or D800 if you want to be serious with your full frame?

If you’re looking for a serious compact camera then you may have already narrowed your choice down to either the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 or the Canon’s PowerShot G1 X. The Sony is a sexy piece of kit with clean lines while the bulkier Canon has more going on under the hood; but do you really need the extras?

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is probably the best overall Canon DSLR after factoring value for money. However, there will be those who may argue that this crown should go to the Canon EOS 7D.
