Casio EXILIM EX-S10 - Slim Beauty
Reviewed on 25 January 2008

Think you got yourself a slim camera? Just wait until you see Casio's latest EXILIM EX-S10 camera that measures only just 15mm thin. Currently the World’s slimmest 10.1 megapixel compact camera, it's found itself to become the Nicole Richie of digital compacts today. Like Miss Richie, Casio has also done aplenty to make sure the EX-S10 is stepping out in style. Possessing a strong feel of quality and decked out in a tantalising choice of colours, an impressive range of features are also packed inside to complement its good looks.

Casio EXILIM EX-S10 - Slim Beauty

Almost six years since the birth of the EXILIM series, Casio is now closer than ever to giving us a ‘wearable card camera’. While the EX-S10 may be a product of Casio’s relentless pursuit of thinness, rest assured that the quality of this camera has not been sacrificed in the process. Therefore, even if you decide to pick one up from us (DigitalRev), you can feel safe in mind that carrying it in public won’t make you seem so much the shallow person who chooses a camera for its looks. That’s because inside its thin compartment, Casio’s cramming in 10.1 megapixels and 3x optical zoom for your photographic pleasure. Essentially, what you are getting is a resolution that’s so good, you can actually see it, enlarge it, crop it, and print it and be perfectly proud of it.

Sporting a nice 2.7-inch wide LCD with 230,000 pixels, the EX-S10 also provides Casio's popular YouTube Capture Mode to satisfy the YouTube fanatic. By recording in the iTunes-compatible H.264 video format, videos can be conveniently transferred and enjoyed on Apple’s nifty iPod. Making its debut on the EX-S10 is Casio’s Auto Shutter function, a variant of Sony’s Smile Shutter that introduces the fun of spontaneous shooting. Like Sony, this function has the ability to snap photos at the crack of a smile, but unique to Casio, the shutter can also be triggered off when the camera is held perfectly still as you frame for your shot. Furthermore, shots can be automatically taken as you fill the frame with your own face.

Measuring only 15mm thin and weighing 113g light (excluding batteries and accessories), the Casio EXILIM EX-S10's slimness has wowed everyone from the CES to tech bloggers all over. With 10.1 megapixels squeezed inside and packing a bulk of handy features, Casio’s performed a feat that others would have previously thought impossible. Oozing with style while encapsulating stellar performance, the Casio EXILIM EX-S10 will be available at DigitalRev this February.

I bought this new Casio Exilim EX-S10 Model as an upgrade to my older Casio model. I've only had it for three days now and so far I find the new features it offers as outstanding. It's a definite improvement especially taking pictures at dark situations. Pictures came out clear and crisp. Such a powerful point and shoot camera for the price. Battery life is great as well. The new slide show modes and You Tube modes are excellent.

However, there are only two things I've noticed with this model:

1. Manual focusing is almost non-existent. It's difficult to take super close-ups without blurring the focus. But with practice, I'm sure I can make it work.

2. The added BEST SHOT modes are great but one thing I've noticed missing is the BEST SHOT COUPLING MODE. It will not be sorely missed but it's a best shot mode that Casio should have retained.

It is definitely slim, but not frail. Very sturdy for its compact design and lightweight.

All in all, it's a great camera.

Strengths:
1. Slim.
2. Compact.
3. Lightweight.
4. Sturdy.
5. Excellent battery life in between charge.
6. Clear LCD display.
7. Multi level flash mode.
8. PRICE.

Weaknesses:
1. Focusing on super close up is difficult.
2. Too Slim, Compact & Lightweight that you may forget you are carrying one.
3. BEST SHOT COUPLING MODE not present anymore.
