25 March 2009 is a date that has been repeated religiously by many Canon fans lately as the anticipation of the 450D successor grows. Finally, the date has arrived and we were not disappointed as Canon announces its latest DSLR, the Canon EOS 500D (or the Canon EOS Rebel T1i as it is known in the States). Equipped with a 15.1 megapixels CMOS image sensor and delivering ISO sensitivity up to its expanded limit of ISO 12800, we were immediately confident that this release would offer even higher performance to Canon users in this entry level point. Canon was obviously not satisfied with just improved still photography performance and probably spurred in delivering a response to the Nikon D90, the Canon EOS 500D comes with Full HD 1080p recording. Movie shooting in 720p or VGA resolution is also possible depending on your needs.
Simply said, Canon is not giving any room for doubts with the 500D's list of features. Even the LCD has been immensely improved. Since Nikon first launched its D300 with a high resolution LCD, we were expecting the 920k dots resolution to become the industry's standard and Canon's move to include it with the 500D seems to set the bar for all future DSLR releases. Continuing with what we expect is the same 9-point AF system, the Canon 500D will continue to offer the same simple yet very functional performance that will satisfy any DSLR users, whether you are using it as your first DSLR camera or as second camera to make use of its video functions. Some may feel the micro-adjustments feature is sadly missing but it would be too much to ask for everything to be included in this entry level model. Regardless of whether you are a Canon fan or not, the release of this camera will no doubt push our expectations of the entry level DSLRs to new heights.
