Sigma DP1 - Long time coming
Previewed on 26 Mar 2007

If you thought that waiting for the SD14 was torture, try holding out for its long lost cousin, the Sigma DP1. Or wait, there's a good chance that many wanting photographers have already been waiting patiently for the release of this elusive, yet groundbreaking compact digital camera since it was first announced back at last year's Photokina in September.

After teasing us with a series of disappointing delays with the SD14's release, here Sigma are again, throwing our digital camera-adoring hearts through yet another loop with the promise that the DP1 will be on the other end of one more, short wait. Last week, the company kick-started their mesmeric marketing campaign for the DP1 once again, with the launch of a dedicated offical website revealing features, images and specifications.

And just why do so many endure this intense and agonising wait? The answer to that riddle is not difficult to decipher. The new DP1 is a stylish compact camera like no other. With all the functions of a full-spec DSLR, the DP1 shares the same landmark Foveon 14-mega pixel sensor as its DSLR cousin and holds a sensor which boasts about 10 times the area of a conventional compact camera's sensor. A 16.6mm f/4 lens, with an enviable angle of view, has been developed to maximise the image quality provided by the innovative sensor.

Those who still advocate that film holds superior image quality over digital apparently haven't encountered the DP1. Outfitted with Sigma's unique and powerful "True" image processor, the camera can easily take on large image files with exceptional definition at the speed of a DSLR. Sigma's best kept secret is also equipped with a large 2.5" TFT LCD with 100% image preview for simple and efficient picture composition.

By supplying functions that surpass the standard limits of today's compact digital capabilities, Sigma has earned their right to some leeway when it comes to giving us the future's technology on time. Working years ahead of our realm of possibility, Sigma is busy preparing the world for the arrival of a major breakthrough that goes by the name of DP1.

The Sigma DP1 will be available to buy from DigitalRev soon. Please check back for updates on its arrival.
