The Best Comes to Those Who Wait - Canon EOS 500D and Nikon D400
18 March 2009

CES and PMA has come and gone and you can’t but feel a little let down by the lack of news of a new DSLR release from either Canon or Nikon. Be that as it may, we could be surprised yet. Whether it’s just the refusal to accept reality by certain parties or a devious ploy to garner attention by Canon or Nikon, we are certainly hearing more potential rumours of DSLR releases recently.

Canon EOS 500DThe news on the grapevine sounds pretty certain that Canon will be announcing the EOS 500D later this month, to either replace or act as a step up from its 450D. The Canon 500D will likely come with HD video recording features as well so that it could better compete with the Nikon D90 which already has HD recording. Whether the 500D will come with FULL HD is anybody’s guess but the sensor is likely to be that of the Canon 50D and will offer the same 15.1 megapixels as well. The focusing system and other features are likely to remain largely the same as the 450D, with the possible exception being a higher resolution LCD – either 460k dots or 920k dots, with the former being more likely to keep costs reasonable.

Nikon D400Not to let Canon steal all the limelight, Nikon is also likely to come up with its D300 replacement, the Nikon D400. News on this is less certain though, with many parties still expecting a D700X to come out instead for a challenge against the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Considering how Nikon pretty much miniaturised the D3 into the D700, seeing a D700X with the features of the D3X is almost expected. The question is what comes first? High megapixels or FULL HD video recording and that may well determine whether we see the D700X or the D400. It would make things interesting if the D700X came with video recording as well. After all, Canon did it with the 5D Mark II and so anything less from Nikon would be like an admission of defeat. Regardless, it should be safe to assume that the D400 will come with at least a 15 megapixels sensor to match the 50D while the D700X should be at least 24.5 megapixels. Other bells and whistles? No doubt we’ll find out before long.

In one hand quite a few journalists carry either photo or video cameras. To load with two-in-one camera would be a good new for them. In the other hand, professional photographers would enjoy a new FX 20mpx or more; cheaper,of course, than N D3x. Nikon company has technology to deliver such a camera (D750, D4, D3s,....I don't care) If they don't do that as soon as they can probably they'll find serious problems with the costumer. Digital bussiness is relatively recent and Canon is pushing strong.

I was wondering if the D400 will feature a touchscreen LCD?
