The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 hails the full bloom of the micro four thirds system for Panasonic. Since their launch of the G1, Panasonic has poured a lot of energy into positioning their LUMIX G Micro System line-up at the forefront of their camera development. Perhaps it's because of the poor market performance of their DSLRs, the L1 and L10. It's unlikely that they could make as much impact with a new DSLR then with their launch of micro Four Thirds cameras. The G1 was a large bridge camera sized interchangeable lens camera but to most of us, that was merely a by-product to what is our expected final form, that of the GF1.
Delivering all that you would expect from a full blown DSLR, except for a viewfinder, the Panasonic Lumix GF1 is without a doubt what a lot of enthusiasts and professionals are looking forward to. It is significantly lighter than its competitor, the Olympus PEN E-P1, at a mere 285g (body only) and also offers a built-in flash as well. What's more, the lack of a built-in viewfinder is not an issue thanks to an optional external electronic viewfinder (DMW-LVF1) that can be purchased if you feel the need. HD Video recording is also available on the GF1 in the AVCHD Lite format to give you highly compressed files while maintaining a high degree of quality.
Specifications of the Panasonic GF1 includes a 12.1 megapixels Live MOS sensor, a 3.0-inch Intelligent LCD which delivers 60fps Full-time Live View images with 460k dots resolution and a highly responsive and accurate AF system. The contrast AF system adopted in the Lumix GF1 offers you a range of AF modes, including multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas, 1-area AF with a selectable focus area, Face Detection, and AF Tracking. In the 1-area AF mode, the AF frame size can be changed by simply turning a dial. The GF1 also offers 16 Scene Modes which can also be automatically selected while in the iA (Intelligent Auto) mode. The Lumix GF1 also has a Quick AF function that begins focusing as soon as the user aims the camera without waiting for you to half-press the shutter. This ensures that you are always ready to get the best possible results even in those spontaneous moments. The Panasonic GF1 also comes with the highly efficient Dust Reduction System which takes away the worry of dust while changing lenses.
With Panasonics's strong focus on their LUMIX G Micro System line-up since the launch of the Lumix G1, it will come as no surprise that Panasonic has also released a range of micro four thirds lenses which are optimised for use with the G Micro System cameras. What this means is that your purchase of the GF1 will allow you to benefit from a large and expending range of mirco four thirds lenses that will make your creative shooting with the GF1 limitless.Stay tuned for DigitalRev's hands-on review.
