While some filters are generally used for artistic effect, others help prevent flares and haziness in photos. Many photographers see them as a little extra protection to valuable lenses. UV filters are popular not only for their ability to stop Ultra-Violet light from making images look a little hazy but some photographers also consider filters to be lenses first line of defence against the elements.
